hey grant, not sure if anyone has mentioned this, has anyone expressed a hesitation to participate because of some of the subway weirdness the last few weeks. people getting stabbed etc…?
come on, getting stabbed isn’t that bad… no, no one has mentioned it, but if they do, I’ll just ask if they’re a scaredy-cat. But seriously, I’ve taken so many pictures so far, not one person has even noticed, they all just assume I’m typing a message on my phone.
Honestly, anyone who thinks you’re taking a picture of them has some serious ego issues. Also, people take pictures for this stuff all the time, there are plenty of blogs making fun of people in weird clothes, with dogs, sleeping, eating improperly, or ass cracks hanging out of pants, etc… I’m not too worried.
looks like some progress has been made on the project. my least favorite part of the manual is how you are treating the headlines.
i also will lodge a comment i don’t think you want to hear (that at this point you need to shrug off to get this done) this still feels like a in store promotion for a product to me. its that or maybe it feel like advertising for something. i love the idea, the name and that you made it work, but my least favorite thing about it is the actual graphic design.
on another front, there are a number of FPO areas for illustration. will your illustrator be able to fill these holes in time?
yep, definitely didn’t want to hear that right now… but I’ll consider it if I can. Though, I don’t really understand exactly what you mean. The illustrator will be done with all the drawings by next week at the very latest. Hopefully by wednesday though.
you have been working very hard at making this accessible, but accessible can also lead elsewhere. like the feeling that one is being asked for something more than participation. usually things that look this way and are visible have money behind them.
Hey, I think this looks really good. The design matches the illustration style, and It all seems to dance somewhere in between serious and humorous. The website looks really slick, and seems to work well. I really dont have much critique to give (and it seems others don’t either?). I could see Paul’s point about it looking like its about to become some companies new underground ad campaign but when it doesnt, it will make it even better.
Also, I think the color manual looks great on issue like it is, but when you print it B&W (right?) it will add a little grit to it that will dull it down a bit… in a good way.
I will get some violations filed in the next week, Ive been riding my bike alot in this nice weather, and I am working on overcoming my fear of stabbing:), but I will come through.
I think the website’s fine and works alright, although there was a little “glitch” or something when I tried to preview a report before submitting; I will email you a screenshot and explain.
A couple notes on the manual: I don’t like the way “RULES”, at its same large size, is on the cover, the title page, and the page just before the rules start. Maybe the entire contents of the title page are a smaller mirroring of the cover rather than the exact same thing. And I don’t think you need the page on the left before the first rule at all. Because the only contents of the book are the rules, I think it will make perfect sense without it. I also still take issue with the way only the first and last rules are bigger. Since the “math” doesn’t work out for bigger ones to be more frequently interspersed, I feel the rules should all be the same size. That would leave one empty page before or after the rules… maybe the code of courtesy would move to the last page, leaving the back cover open for somehting else. Or there is something tiny as a goodbye on that last page.
Other than these “structural” concerns, I think it all looks pretty good.
this sounds like a very good idea to fix the problem with the bigger ones, I will try to have a revision with something like that by wednesday. Also, I definitely want to fix the cover, I’m not certain yet that that is what I will use, it was just something new.
the website looks really cool, i like the simplicity and the color. i just filed a report. it’s a little bit hard for me because i don’t have a iphone, but i will try my best to take some more photos without getting stab.
i have similar comment on the manual as jarrod, i think it’s in the previous post. but overall looks really good in screen.

i am glad it isn’t an issue.

The titling is pulled almost directly from your plumbing manual.
maybe its not weird enough.

wait, now I’m confused, are you talking about the website, the manual, or both?

thanks chris, I’ve been trying to get out on the bike too, I’m so happy its starting to get warm again. good luck with the stabbing.
